What is the Motif of the 2020 German 2 Euro Coin?
This 2020 German 2 Euro commemorative coin is dedicated to the federal state of Brandenburg (Bradenburg in English). The state is located in eastern Germany, bordering Poland.
A curiosity about Bradenburg is that it completely surrounds Berlin, although the capital is not part of the state. It is common in several countries for the capital to be considered a state in its own right, even though geographically it is located within another state of the country.
Bradenburg has a very long history dating back to the times of the Roman Empire. In fact, since the 12th century it has been considered an autonomous entity, but with the status of an Electoral State of the Holy Roman Empire. Unification with Germany took place in the 19th century, and since then it has been one of the most important strongholds of the nation.
Potsdam is the most important city of the state of Bradenburg, it is logical that it is the state capital. In this city we find the Sanssouci Palace, built between 1745 and 1747 as the summer palace of the Prussian King Frederick II the Great. The Palace was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1990.
The German two-euro coin in question features the Sanssouci Palace. An imposing, beautiful building, built in a Rococo style. Its magnificent gardens, masterfully depicted on the 2 euro coin, stand out within the architectural ensemble.
Explanation of the BRANDENBURG coin design
The author of the design of the 2 euro coin dedicated to Bradenburg is Jordi Truxa. A renowned designer who has produced several of the German commemorative coins, many of them thanks to being a regular participant in coin design competitions.
The obverse of the German 2020 commemorative coin features a view of the gardens of Sanssouci Palace. The level of detail of the gardens is impressive. Below the depiction reads the name of the State of Bradenburg and the lettering corresponding to the Mint where it was minted. One of the 5 existing German mints. The initials of the designer are on the Palace, on the sides of the year 2020.
The reverse is the face common to all 2 euro coins minted to date.
The edge of the coin is that of the German coins. That is, it has fine grooves and the inscription “EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT” (“Unity and Justice and Freedom” in English) can be read.
How many 2-euro coins were minted in Germany in 2020?
In 2020, 30,477,400 German 2-euro coins of this design were minted. The pieces are distributed among different types of presentation and finish.
Most of the pieces were intended for circulation. A portion was prepared to be offered to collectors of this type of coins. The prices of each presentation vary according to different criteria.

Curiosities about the German 2 euro coin 2020.
The 2 euro coin dedicated to the State of BRANDENBURG was chosen by competition, to which several designers submitted very interesting proposals. Jordi Truxa won among the participants, repeating the milestone he has achieved on other occasions; for example, the 50 euro gold coin “Orchestra Horn” minted the same year.
Another curiosity associated with this 2022 German 2 euro coin is that it repeats the motif of another coin minted in 1986, in the then German Democratic Republic. Basically, the Sanssouci Palace is present on the commemorative 5 Deutsche Mark coin.
As can be seen, both the motif and the view of the Sanssouci Palace gardens are repeated on the 1986 5 Mark coin. Of course, the 2 Euro piece is superior in design and finish.
